Heavy snow fall in parts of Switzerland

The last days it snowed heavy in big parts of the country. The amount of snow was so heavy that the record for snow in November is broken. The old record came from 1959 and was registered in Santa Maria in canton Gräubunden in Eastern Switzerland and amounted 69cm. This weak they measured 71cm in the same place as the old record was measured. With this heavy snowfall, a couple of ski areas opened their slopes.

This weak they measured 71cm in the same place as the old record was measured. With this heavy snowfall, a couple of ski areas opened their slopes.

Of course there is not only positive news about the heavy snowfall. Road and rail companies had major problems with the amount of snow. Where normally some rails are closed because of the winter season, last weekend there were several roads closed. Especially in the eastern of Swiss the ski station of Saas Fee was impossible to reach by car. The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) line was this weekend also covered in snow, the train could not run.

Around a dozen mountain resorts out of 200 are reported open across Switzerland this weekend. Davos and Arosa in the south-east of the country will open their lifts, as well as Andermatt and Engelberg in central Switzerland, and Adelboden-Elsigenalp-Metsch and Grindelwald-Wengen in the Bernese Oberland, according to Switzerland Tourism. “It’s an early start to the season, but not a record,” Andreas Keller, spokesperson for the Swiss Ski Lift Association, told Keystone-SDA.
The organisation is optimistic about the upcoming winter season. It predicts a small increase in the number of overnight stays (+2.3%) and day passes (+1%), based on forecasts by the KOF Swiss Economic Institute and figures from last year. The 2018-2019 winter season saw the largest number of skiers on Swiss slopes since 2010-2011.
However, Christmas and New Year remain the most critical holiday periods for the tourism and hotel sectors, representing 25% of annual turnover, Keller said.

Upgrading of the Swiss ski resorts

The Swiss ski resorts are anxious to transport us to their most beautiful natural areas. At the moment, though, the ski resorts are struggling with high barriers. The strong Swiss franc, lack of snow & strong competition abroad, are only a few hurdles the Swiss ski resorts currently have to overcome. Since ski tourism is very important for Switzerland, millions are invested in new infrastructure every year.

There are several things that make life difficult for the high-price island of Switzerland. Mild winters, partly medium altitudes, declining number of skiers are just some of them. The mountain areas react with large investments in the ski areas. A snow-making system that can be operated up to 5 degrees +, new, faster and more comfortable gondolas are built. In the following example, the Gstaad mountain rides, many millions are currently being invested in this area.

Snow-making machines

New snowmaking system of the Bergbahnen Destination gstaad is put into operation. In recent years, Gstaad has invested a lot in new snow-making equipment. More than 80 modern and powerful snow machines were purchased in the Saanersloch-Hornberg-Horneggli area. In recent years, BDG has invested a total of more than 10 million francs in the expansion and renewal of its technical snowmaking systems, according to gstaad.ch.

New gondola lift in the Saanersloch ski resort

The more than 40 year old gondola lift, which disturbed nature with a lot of noise, was taken out of operation. A new, faster and much quieter gondola lift was built. “The lift will significantly increase comfort for snow sports enthusiasts by providing more space in the cabins, quieter transport, complete glass covers and ground level boarding,” says Heinz Brand, Chairman of the Board of Directors of BDG. According to BZ, 29 million was invested for this purpose.

Conclusion

The upgrade of the Swiss ski lifts is not only positive, all the construction work and finally also the operation changes / disturbs the Swiss nature. Heavy machines / helicopters are used to transport the gondolas to the ski area. Nevertheless, progress is constantly being made with the lifts. Today a gondola lift is much quieter and more ecological than before + skiing gives you a wonderful insight into the Swiss nature.
